Get Your Rear in Gear 5k, April 27th 2013

Hey guys!

Yesterday was my first ever, actually run- not walk- 5k! While I did not do as well as I had hoped, this is just a starting point, and I am SO EXCITED to see the progress I make from here to the Disney Princess Half in 2014. I finished 83rd out of the women, and Andrew finished 76th out of the men; with over 800 people running, I’m pretty proud of that achievement. The one thing I was hoping for though, was to finish in less than 30 minutes. Well, I was close, but I finished in 31m 57s. ALMOST THERE! So now, I know that if I hadn’t actually stopped to drink that water, and would have run just a little bit harder, I could have met my goal. So, new goal? Sub 30 minutes on the next one (which should be in about a month), and beating Andrew’s 27 minutes would be AMAZING.

I did learn some valuable lessons though! Don’t try to close at work the night before an early (timed) run like this. 3 hours of sleep did NOT help my confidence or motivation. My wonderful Nike shorts, not the best to try to PR in. My new socks? Meh. Shoes are fine, although I’d like to try the Nike Free’s. Biggest lesson of all? Don’t immediately stop after the finish line for a minute or two, and then try to walk somewhere. Um, ow!

Weekend Recap

Well, I finally got my man home from his vacation, and boy did I miss him. The only downside is I don’t have as much free time to run! We were supposed to run downtown for Boston Strong, but Andrew was sick again that morning, so we couldn’t 😦 I was pretty bummed, but I know he’s been feeling terrible lately.
Sunday was gorgeous, and I had a yolo breakfast of eggs and veggies and potatoes before heading to Earth Day.
Getting back on track today! Our first 5k is this Saturday, and I am stoked!
I’ve got bananas, peanut butter, coconut oil, and protein powder shakes for meals at work this week, and I’m going to try to run tonight after work I’d it’s not too dark.

4.09 For Boston Strong

2 thoughts: 
a) I need to become a morning person
b) Never run at Noon in Louisiana. 

Today I ran my 4.09 miles for Boston, starting from Andrew’s house, heading down to the LSU lakes, and then back. And man, was it hot. I’m going to HAVE to learn to love 6am for these runs. I tracked my time and splits using C25K Free on my Iphone, which is (hopefully) preparing me for the GYRIG 5k on the 27th. I also dedicated my run to Achilles, in honor of the Boston Marathon, donating 10 miles of hope (or $5). I did try out a new Iphone app today, called Map My Run. I really enjoyed this application, because it tracked my course (much more accurately than Charity Miles), called out my times, splits, and distance. Bonus? It gives you Walgreens Reward Points, just for using it! (I can’t believe I run with three apps, plus I ❤ Radio. High Maintenance much?)

Other than the heat, it was a beautiful day outside, and I definitely made good on the title of this blog! My mood is lifted, I’m a sweaty mess, and I received 5 high fives from other runners- I love how supportive everyone is right now.

I’m a Popster. What of it?

I just got my ass kicked by a tiny Asian girl.

No really! I just finished Perky Butt ‘n Long Lean Legs, Gangam Style Cardio, and That’s what makes you Bootyfull by Cassey Ho on Blogilates! And man, am I a sweaty mess right now. But that’s what’s great about it! I can have a terrible day, and seeing Cassey smile and joke me through a killer workout just makes it so much better.

Looking forward to running tomorrow morning- 4.09 miles for the Boston Marathon. I’ve been too focused on the news and the tragedy, and not enough on the survivors, heroes, and honoring all of those runners and spectators. Boston Strong!

Children’s Hospital, Marathons, and thoughts about the Boston Bombing

I have my first 5k coming up in just 2 weeks (Get Your Rear In Gear for Colon Cancer), which is super close to my heart thanks to my Momma, but I want to take a moment to shamelessly plug my Crowdrise fundraising page for the New Orleans Jazz Half, benefiting Children’s Hospital.

By supporting my first attempt at running the New Orleans Jazz Half Marathon, you will also be supporting the Cancer Program at Children’s Hospital. Children’s Hospital treats more Louisiana kids with cancer than all other facilities combined. Children’s Hospital’s LaNasa-Greco Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders treats more than 1,100 children with cancer each year, and the hospital has a policy of never turning away a child who needs the care they offer, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

This isn’t my first time fundraising for Children’s Hospital, and it’s a charity near and dear to me. Starting off at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, I became involved in my first Dance Marathon as a moraler for my best friend Rachel. As a school, we raised over $126,000 for Children’s Miracle Network- and seeing those kids faces made those 33 hours worth it. Now, I’m running in the GYRIG Colon Cancer 5k in just under 2 weeks, wearing a Dragonfly Foundation T-Shirt. After my mom beat cancer (take that!), she became heavily involved in this amazing organization focused on bringing comfort and joy to kids and young adults with cancer or blood-related illness. While I haven’t had a chance to fund raise for this one, outside of my race fee, I am so excited to promote this amazing charity in Baton Rouge.

So now, I ask for your help and support in raising funds for the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. The bombing and victims in the Boston Marathon yesterday really made an impact on me, and my decision to a)run while I can and b) support these little ones, who need us most. Children’s Hospital in Boston is an amazing gift to those injured, and I’m sure they will be feeling the love and appreciation from around the country this week for the role they played in caring for the littlest victims. Let’s support and give attention to ALL Children’s Hospitals, which act as angels to these children every day across the nation.

Once upon a time, in southern Louisiana…

a young woman lived in a garage apartment. Although she had almost everything her heart desired, the woman was tired, unhealthy, and unhappy. But then, one spring night, a Youtube Blogger appeared on her Facebook page, and showed her a way to become happier, healthier, and inspired. 

Intrigued by her infectious happiness, the woman committed to following the Blogger’s Pop Pilates plan, and signed the month of April away. The best lesson taught though, was for the woman not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. And when she decided to try, the weight and sadness began to melt away to reveal beautiful princess.

And as reward, the woman began to transform into a healthy, happy, runner. Proud of her new found health, the woman decided to commit to not only a 5k and Pop Pilates, but also two half marathons within the next year.  If she could learn to love her health, and earn donations to her charities in return by the time the last petal fell for the Disney Princess Half Marathon, then the woman will have met her goal. If not, she would just have to try again. As the days passed, she became more and more motivated, and gained hope. For who wouldn’t be motivated to run by a beauty and a beast?

No really guys and gals. My name is Lauren, I’m 25 years old, and I truly am on a quest to eat clean, be healthy, and run in the 2014 Disney Princess Half Marathon.
